Our Philosophy

Our Philosophy

Back pain is common, and it often goes ignored and untreated. Most people just get on with it as best as they can, but it doesn’t have to be that way. The aim of our specialist spine care unit at the Harley Street Hospital is to eliminate any type of spine problem that stops you from getting on with life. We are passionate about using what we know about the spine to help you do more than just get by. If we can help our patients reduce or eliminate back pain, and restore the overall health of their spine, then we will have achieved our mission.

Our team is led by consultant orthopaedic surgeon Dr Mo Akmal. Dr Mo Akmal is the preferred second opinion specialist for Medix International, a global health services opinion provider. He is also the second opinion provider for patients about to undergo spinal surgery insured by Vitality Health Insurance Company. He is renowned for both his passion for spines and his expertise in treating the problems that affect them. In fact, this has driven him to combine approaches in neurosurgery and osteopathy and through this to develop unrivalled expertise in the assessment, diagnostics and surgical and therapeutic treatment of any type of spinal problem.

Dr Akmal is also well-known for his stance on conservative treatments first. As a result, many medical experts, including doctors in the same field, often refer patients to him for a second opinion. In 90 percent of cases where patients have been advised to have surgery Dr Akmal has been able to help them avoid this by treating their problem with a less invasive and, usually, far more effective option. Non-invasive options include pain management, physiotherapy, osteopathy and acupuncture, as well as surgical procedures that are kinder to the body, such as laser surgery, ozone therapy and keyhole surgery. If a patient’s condition doesn’t respond to these conservative options or warrants traditional surgery, then we can and will carry out these too. However, by veering toward non-invasive treatments first we’re able to get our patients on the road to recovery much quicker since they are not having to deal with the often-overlooked risks and drawbacks that come with traditional surgery.

We specialise in regenerative technologies such as using the body’s own healing mechanisms to repair damage. Our unique adipose derived mesenchymal stem cell system delivers potent healing cells injected into the spine to promote healing and potentially repair areas of degeneration.

The aim is to make use of the body’s own natural healing abilities to correct problems in the spine by controlling factors such as pain and mobility. For example, a course of cortisone injections can help a patient manage pain more effectively while undergoing a series of rehabilitation exercises to strength the spine and supporting areas. With stress eliminated and painful inflammation under control the body can now begin to heal.
