Laser Disc Surgery

Laser Disc Surgery Experts

Laser disc surgery -Lasers have been used in surgery for many years with varying degrees of success. At the London Spine Unit, we use the latest development in medical laser technology, where a focal concentration of laser energy to target and vaporise protruding or bulging disc material without any danger of damaging surrounding vital structures like nerves or blood vessels.

The laser can be transmitted through thin, flexible capillary optical fibre, which means we can thread the laser probe through a needle into the spine under X-ray guidance. As such laser discectomy can be performed under supervised sedation as a day case; without the risks of general anaesthesia.

There are a variety of lasers that are used in surgery. For spinal surgery it is important that the laser device is validated and delivers the exact amount of energy to shrink the disc. At the London Spine Unit we use the most advanced laser technology known as Neo Laser.

Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression PLDD (Laser Spine Surgery)

Unlike conventional open discectomy, the pinpoint accuracy also means only the offending disc fragment is vaporised by the laser, leaving the surrounding healthy disc tissue unharmed.

Laser Disc SurgeryThis is especially useful in the neck where often the only surgical option is to remove the whole disc, necessitating the use of an artificial disc substitute.

At The London Spine Unit, we have performed hundreds of Laser Disc Surgeries. Our experts specialise in this technique and will let you know if your case is suitable for this technique.

In the lumbar region pain reduction has been observed in 70% of patients operated by PLDD.

We also undertake Laser disc surgery for cervical spine disc herniations. The procedure is performed under sedation as day case. All our procedures are performed in our state of the art hospital facilities at The Harley Street Hospital19 Harley Street, London, UK.
