Growth of a minimally invasive strategy to equine cervical articular side joints for placement of an ND:YAG LASER.

Summary
The aim of this research was to develop a minimally invasive strategy to equine cervical articular side joints for software of an ND:YAG LASER and to guage the consequences of the laser fiber on the encircling tissue. Below basic anesthesia, an ND:YAG LASER was used to use 2000 J of power to five cervical articular side joints in three horses (15 joints whole). Horses have been euthanized and the cervical aspects and spinal cords have been examined grossly and histologically. Gross pathology of the articular aspects revealed proof of articular cartilage charring and diffuse roughening of the floor. Histopathology confirmed coagulative necrosis. This novel approach allowed entry to the cervical articular side joints with the ND:YAG LASER and has the potential to permit efficiency of a minimally invasive facilitated ankylosis process. Additional validation in sedated, standing horses is required to ascertain security and efficacy of this method.
