Cervical Spinal surgery treats structural abnormalities of the neck that cause pain.
Indications
-It is indicated in cases where there is significant compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots, and when this is undoubtedly due to the structural abnormality detected.
-One of the injuries treated by spinal surgery is cervical disc herniation. Cervical surgery may be necessary to reduce pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots when pain is caused by a herniated disc or a bony narrowing of the spinal canal.
-Surgery may also be necessary for trauma to stabilize the cervical spine and minimize the possibility of paralysis, when a fracture or dislocation causes vertebral instability. Likewise, cervical surgery is also used for cases of degenerative diseases.
What is disc herniation?
Disc herniation is compression of the spinal cord or nerve root that occurs when part of an intervertebral disc is displaced.
Hernias usually affect the discs in the lower back (lumbar spine) or in the neck (cervical spine). In the latter case we will refer to cervical disc herniation or cervical hernias.
The pain caused by a hernia can spread from the back to the leg, leading to leg pain, or to the arm.
Most of the time, disc rupture occurs as a result of its ageing and natural deterioration, although it can also occur in young people due to various causes.
The trigger for a healthy disc to herniate can be trauma, a violent blow, or poor effort. Cervical surgery may be necessary to reduce pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots when pain is caused by a herniated disc or a bony narrowing of the spinal canal.
Types of Cervical Spine Surgery
-Anterior Cervical Discectomy.
-Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF).
-Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Disc Replacement (ACDR).
-Posterior Cervical Foraminotomy.
-Posterior Cervical Decompression and Fusion.
-Cervical Laminoplasty.
About day case surgery
Harley Street Hospital is one one of the few centres that perform cervical spine surgery as day case. It offers several advantages, such as the following:
-Day case surgery is performed under local anaesthesia. Thanks to type of sedation, the patient can go back home the same day.
– It is a minimally invasive procedure that uses advanced equipment.
– We apply special medications to relax the muscles to avoid muscle spasm and pain after the procedure.
– Lower risk of complications such as deep venous thrombosis, infections on the ward, and other issues related to delayed mobilisation.
-Finally, diminished risk of contracting COVID-19 since you will have a shorter hospital stay and the fact that we take preventive measures seriously.
