On July 27th of this year, Mr. Mo Akmal at the London Spine Unit performed a decompression and stabilization operation to address my 12 years of spinal stenosis degeneration. I am now 7 weeks post operation and virtually pain-free. My posture is normal, I’m able to get a proper nights sleep and I’m walking two miles per day. I honestly feel like it’s been a miracle.

Mr. Akmal treated me holistically in the most caring and professional manner imaginable, with the least invasive approach being applied to my medical condition. Truly remarkable and one-of-a-kind.

I am beyond grateful to Mr. Akmal and the staff at the London Spine Unit for the undivided care I received. A very special thank you to all of you.

Mr. Akmal is a renowned spinal surgeon who has been performing minimally invasive spinal surgery for years. This type of surgery involves using specialized instruments and techniques to access and treat spinal conditions with minimal damage to surrounding tissues.

The benefits of minimally invasive spinal surgery are numerous. Patients experience less pain, scarring, and blood loss, and have shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times compared to traditional open surgery. This approach also allows for greater precision and accuracy in targeting the affected area, resulting in better outcomes.

Mr. Akmal uses a variety of techniques depending on the patient’s condition and needs. Some of the most common procedures he performs include spinal decompression, spinal fusion, and disc replacement surgery. In spinal decompression, he removes a small portion of bone or tissue that is pressing on the spinal cord or nerves, relieving pain and other symptoms. In spinal fusion, he uses small screws and rods to stabilize the spine and promote bone growth. In disc replacement surgery, he replaces a damaged spinal disc with an artificial one, preserving motion and reducing pain.

To perform minimally invasive spinal surgery, Mr. Akmal uses advanced imaging technologies such as CT scans and MRI scans to create a detailed map of the patient’s anatomy. He then makes small incisions in the skin and inserts specialized instruments through these openings to access the spine. A tiny camera, called an endoscope, is used to provide visualization of the surgical area. Using this approach, Mr. Akmal is able to perform complex spinal procedures with precision and accuracy.

Overall, Mr. Akmal’s expertise in minimally invasive spinal surgery has provided countless patients with relief from spinal conditions and improved quality of life. Through his commitment to using the latest techniques and technologies, he continues to advance the field of spinal surgery and provide patients with the best possible care.

Questions and Answers

What is the Best Lumbar Fusion Technique ?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of the best lumbar fusion technique, as the choice of technique depends on several factors, including the patient's age, medical history, and the specific spinal condition being treated. Here are some of the most common lumbar fusion techniques:

  1. Posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF): This technique involves making an incision in the back and removing the damaged disc. A bone graft is then placed in the disc space, and screws and rods are used to stabilize the spine.

  2. Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF): This technique is similar to PLIF but involves accessing the disc from the side of the spine, through a small incision. It may be preferred for patients with limited mobility or other medical issues that make the posterior approach difficult.

  3. Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF): This technique involves making an incision in the front of the abdomen to access the spine. The damaged disc is removed, and a bone graft is inserted into the disc space. Plates and screws may also be used to stabilize the spine.

  4. Lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF): This technique involves accessing the spine through a small incision in the side of the body. A bone graft is inserted into the disc space, and screws and rods may be used to stabilize the spine.

  5. Minimally invasive lumbar fusion (MIS): This technique involves using small incisions and specialized surgical instruments to perform the fusion. The goal is to minimize tissue damage and reduce the risk of complications.

The best lumbar fusion technique for a particular patient depends on various factors, and the choice of technique should be made in consultation with a qualified spine surgeon.

What is the best treatment for Sciatica ?

The best treatment for sciatica depends on the underlying cause of the condition. Here are some of the most common treatment options for sciatica:

  1. Pain relief: Pain medication, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), may help to alleviate the pain associated with sciatica.

  2. Physical therapy: A physical therapist can work with the patient to develop an exercise program that strengthens the muscles supporting the spine and improves flexibility. This can help to relieve pressure on the affected nerve and reduce symptoms.

  3. Epidural steroid injections: These injections may be used to reduce inflammation and relieve pain in the affected area.

  4. Surgery: In cases where other treatments have not been effective, surgery may be recommended. Surgery can be used to remove a herniated disc or to relieve pressure on the affected nerve.

  5. Alternative therapies: Complementary therapies, such as chiropractic care, acupuncture, and massage, may also be beneficial for relieving the symptoms of sciatica.

It is important to note that the best treatment for sciatica will vary depending on the individual and the underlying cause of the condition. A qualified healthcare provider can help to determine the best course of treatment for each patient.
